Specialised eating disorder ward opens at new hospital in Shipley
A new 24-bed hospital, Cygnet Elowen, had its grand opening event in Derbyshire in July, increasing our region's capacity for adult eating disorder inpatient care. The hospital, located in Shipley in Derbyshire, includes the 12-bed Nova Ward which provides specialist care for adults living with eating disorders. The Nova Ward has been commissioned by the East Midlands Adult Eating Disorder Provider Collaborative to expand the provision of inpatient care across the East Midlands.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was led by Councilor Alan Abernethy, Mayor of Heanor and Loscoe, who was joined by Cygnet colleagues, NHS partners, local dignitaries and a former eating disorder patient who now works as an Expert by Experience, supporting others undergoing treatment.
Mollie Anderton is a former patient involved in the design of the building and, speaking at the opening ceremony, highlighted how her involvement had been meaningfully used to improve the design of the building to meet the needs of patients.
The opening of the new unit expands inpatient bed availability in the East Midlands significantly from 15 to 27 beds. It means more patients can be treated closer to home, nearer to their families and loved ones.
